| Description |
Socrates once said that “the unexamined life is not worth living” and I used this bit of wisdom by collecting contemporary books that focused on problems that teenagers face today. I am a Learning Specialist at the High School working with students who have reading and writing disabilities. When I came to Molalla, my students saw books as the enemy and fought adamantly to avoid them at all costs. Now, my students have started developing an interest in reading because of this focus and I would like to continue to foster their interest by expanding the classroom library.
The books that I have found (please see Materials Needed for the titles and authors) all focus on expanding their perceptions of themselves, others, and the world around them. Great emphasis will be placed on forming and justifying opinions, understanding perceptions and assumptions, understanding point of view, and decision making. My students’ critical thinking skills and reading and writing skills are developing hand in hand and a larger classroom library will facilitate that process. The money amount that I specified would be enough to buy the books and pay for shipping. |
